Outdoor Fun

Grow, Baby, Grow!

The fruits of our hard labor:

We (mostly me) are impatient and cannot wait until the garden is overflowing with veggies.

Sara gave us a pool.
Yep, you read that right.
I said I needed to get a new one, and she said she had one she needed to unload.
Thank you, Sara! You rock!
Happy kids

Have a great week!

Horrible Truth

Nearly 46 MILLION Americans lack health insurance.

Is that something you can live with?

Weekends: Relaxing & Thinking

We've been playing outside, piddling in the garden, and trying to keep cool. It continues to be steamy here with humidity making the overall temperature feel over 100 degrees. BLECH!

Yummers! Fruit!
***
The chair is done! I am not 100% thrilled with it, but it is done, and I am sure it will be done again if we continue to own it.
***
Also, I have been thinking about the internet and the news lately. The news has horrible....North Korea, Iran, Afghanistan, Iraq....Michael Jackson...Republican cheater senator...It goes on. And I am dumbfounded by all the Jon and Kate coverage, while it seems more pressing international issues take a back burner.

We don't watch much television. We don't get cable tv. But, I do keep up on the internet and NPR. Quite frankly, it scares the crap out of me. So, I think I will take a media break a couple days a week. Worry won't change a thing, but opting out of worrying just might.

Our New Baby

We have some exciting news....Let me introduce to you the newest member of our family:

Ralphie Boots
Ralphie is less than an hour old here. And his little eyes hadn't even opened yet. He is a rat terrier, and will be coming home to us in 8 weeks. This picture is a not the best. I think he wasn't even fully clean when it was taken. And it was taken off a cell phone!

Oh, in case you were wondering...Moe named him. We threw around different names, and we all liked his the best.

The Weekend

We were busy this weekend. I can't believe how tired I am and it is only Monday! UGH!

Kevin inflated the kiddie pool, and the kids love it.

We also played with Gears! Gears! Gears! all weekend long. (Yes, they use exclamations in the name brand... I find it annoying too. You can't say "hey lets play Gears, Gears, Gears" with a flat affect. Instead you are required to say it with excitement and joy.)

See the joy on Kevin's face?

Moe made this one. It is supposed to be the "Wiggles' car" and these weebles are the Wiggles...:)
These sets can be pricey, so I am always on the lookout at yard sales and Goodwill for more sets. They all work together, and some of them come with a motor that can make your creation go forward or backward.
***

And we decided to work on an old chair. I got two of these chairs for $50 at Feather Your Nest. We think they are from the 20's, but not sure. Anyway, they are solid wood, but the fabric was dry rotted, and there was some repair work needed on the springs....I know how to pick good chairs....hehehe
If you have any idea who made them or when or what style, please share! There are no markings or lables to indicate who made them or when they were made.

Screwed up springs...

Finally I got all the fabric off, and all the staples out. I do know whoever made it liked using a stapler.

Here is the diagram of the springs and all the wires. Thankfully Kevin did this part. I am just the muscle behind this job. He is the brains.
Here he is weaving the wires into the new burlap.
More on the chair later.

Have a great week!

Unecessary Quotations

Who knew 3 year old Moe could be so sarcastic?
Hehehehe!

Seriously, Happy Father's Day Kevin..and to all the other dads out there too!

For more quotation mark "fun" head over here.

Yay! It's Friday!

I can't believe how big Moe is. Here he is at naptime. Zonked out.

More Moe. He said he is going to give up his thumb, but I doubt it. It is amazing to me all the things children learn in the first 3-4 years of life.

And finally..some more curtains. I don't know what I think about them. Sometimes I like them, while other times I am ambivalent. Maybe they will grow on me....

I am making an effort to use the supplies I have versus hoarding them! I have held onto this fabric forever...I think up grand projects, but then never do them out of fear I will mess it up. Sad. So I am trying to live by the following: I would rather try than not try at all.

Hope everyone has a good weekend. Sorry for this post...it isn't very interesting!

Nature Scavenger Hunt

The idea for this project is not mine. My friend Melissa made one for her daughter, and it looked like a lot of fun. She said she got the idea from another blog. If you know where it came from let me know, and I will give proper credit to that person. :)

Supplies:
1 egg carton
paint (pick colors that can easily be found outdoors)
paintbrush

Take a regular egg carton-not the styrofoam kind- and get started!
I painted over the name brand and personalized it.

Done!
Now start scavenging!

Mimi really enjoyed this project. She took a lot of time going around the yard looking. Then after completing it she said she wants to do it again tomorrow, but will fill it with different objects. I thought that was a good idea.

Moe was not interested in this project at all. In fact, he "washed" his hair with sand.

Have a great week!

SuperNinjas

Mimi and Moe come from a long line of super hero ninjas. It's true. Ask Uncle Keith. He made this in grade school:
No, not the Elmo. He made the ninjas mask for Kevin. Kevin saved it, of course.
So, Keith, in his spare time used CAD to make this mask pattern.
This tip is my favorite.
Thanks Uncle Keith!

So, why aren't the masks made? Because I have some sort of block when it comes to following patterns. I do. I can make all sorts of things...but, not if I have to follow a pattern. So, I pledge to overcome this fear and get these masks made!

***
Eggs anyone? I whipped these up with some spare yarn while watching Letterman last night.

Have a great weekend!

Birthday Boy!

We recently celebrated Moe's birthday. He got this hot wheel track. He is terribly afraid of the shark. So much so that I had to take it out of his room so he could sleep at nap time and night! Poor kid.
*
I don't know why the past three years flew by so quickly, but it did. And now my big boy is three. This time of year is a mixed bag of emotions for me. Moe was born with a birth defect that required surgery. His first month of life was scary and rather difficult . But each year has gotten easier. He seems quite normal now, and the only proof he ever had problems are in the scars.

He is a sweet boy with a kind heart.

Sunday

I can't imagine living in a house without instruments. I say this with full knowledge of my lack of musical abilities. I can't sing or play an instrument. I can drum...but even then I have rather limited skills. My lack of skills doesn't stop me. I still sing....

Kevin can play any instrument. We house enough instruments for an orchestra. We do. We have a violin, a french horn, a full drum set, a mandolin, a ukelele, a clarinet, lots of guitars, a keyboard...various other drums...I am sure I am missing a few instruments. Anyway, you get the idea. Kevin is self taught. I admire that skill. I wish I had it. I enjoy listening to him play.

Mimi jamming to some of Kevin's music.

Our plum tree isn't doing well. We thought we were going to get a good crop, but for whatever reason the tree is ejecting plums faster than we can pick them up.
Sad. I love plums. :(
***
I have plans for these....
carrots!

tomatoes!

green peppers!

Have a good week!

Yay! It's Friday!

Eating apples that aren't ripe? Yuck-o. Mimi likes them though.
***

A fancy meal all for me. The chef?

MOE!
I pretended to eat it. I found a worm in it too. I guess a girl needs her protein. That is Moe...always thinking of his Momma.
***

Aren't these neat? I got them at a yard sale. They were made by Stan Shapes. They were sculpted out of Mt. St. Helen's ash. As I took this picture, I wondered if they are radioactive. I made a mental note to google it, but I haven't because I don't really want to know! I like them.
***

Finally, I made more curtains. I LOVE this fabric.

Have a great weekend!

Birds, Kids, and Sewing

The babies are getting bigger and louder!
***

Mimi can cut with scissors. When did she learn how to do this? I have no idea.
***

Moe is no longer a baby. He is a big kid now.
***

Monsters for Moe's room. He likes them.
***

I made these! The sewing machine did not want to cooperate. After some frustration, I think I now understand how the thing operates. Sewing is like that. There are different levels of understanding. This isn't my most favorite fabric in the world, but I had 5 yards of it, and I wanted to see if I could do it.

Have a good week.
